Blaenau Gwent CBC is looking to recruit a highly qualified lead Practitioner for Children’s Services.  The successful candidate will coordinate the continuing care assessments with staff, improve practitioner assessment knowledge and skills, and implement and monitor changes to processes and procedures within the Continuing Care guidance across Gwent.

As a Senior Social Work Practitioner you will set the standard of leadership for the service.  You will provide clear direction and goals, take responsibility and be accountable for your actions and recognise and encourage the contribution and achievements of others.

You will provide support to Children’s Services in the completion of CHC multi-disciplinary assessments in line with Welsh Government guidance and relevant care law. They will ensue that there is a good understanding of the process for eligibility for CHC across Child Care Teams in Gwent.

You will be required to work in close partnership with Aneurin Bevan Health Board to devise a coherent and consistent approach to the current CHC processes and assessments in order to provide an efficient service to service users and carers in Blaenau Gwent.

You will identify and provide training, mentoring, guidance and support to all Children’s Services staff in relation to CHC processes, and liaise with the relevant Team Managers, Training Section and Aneurin Bevan Health Board to identify the most appropriate support.

You will prepare and deliver a quarterly report on CHC activity across Gwent and present this to the Gwent Heads of Service meeting for scrutiny.

You will comply with the relevant sections of the Authority’s policy statement on Health,
Safety and Welfare at Work and adhere to the principles of the Corporate Equality Policy and ensure commitment to anti-discriminatory practice.

Essential Qualifications & Skills:-


  • CQSW; Diploma in Social Work, Degree in Social Work
  • Registered with Social Care Wales
  • Substantial post qualifying experience within Children’s Social Services
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Knowledge of current legislation/guidance & regulations in relation to Children’s Services
  • An understanding of child protection procedures and safeguarding

The position carries an Approved Casual Car User Allowance therefore access to a vehicle for work purposes is a requirement.
